Travel back in time by way of horseback on an adventure that leads to an old garnet and gem mine in North Carolina – and when you get there, dig for garnets (or other precious gems) of your own. Whatever you find, you get to keep! The Little Pine Garnet Mine became popular in the early 1900s for its treasure trove of high quality garnets. It’s said that even Tiffany, the world-renowned jeweler, once had a contract with the owners of the mine for precious garnets to sell in their New York Store.
Sandy Bottom Trail Rides is located just 30 minutes from Asheville. Reservations can be made online (and are highly suggested as space is limited and rides fill up fast), although walk-ins are welcome if you make a last-minute decision to go and there’s still room available on the ride. Prices for the gem mine ride are: 2-hour ride/$75, 3-hour ride/$100, 4-hour ride/$160. The stable also offers a 1-hour ride for $45, but it doesn’t include a stop at the Litte Pine Garnet Mine.
